Broken Hearts of Gold

A mural dedicated to all affected by congenital heart defects. The butterfly sewing the heart with the needle and thread represents the heart surgeons. The broken heart of gold represent the innocent children born with broken hearts. The butterflies symbolize transformation, hope, and life. The flowers symbolize growth and beauty.

This is the first of our series of art for hearts murals. We are hoping to raise awareness and funds to those affected by CHD. To those 1 in 100, we want you to know that you aren’t alone! People care. We care. Stay strong.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this possible. With your donations and Fort Houston for donating your wall to us.

What is CHD?

CHD stands for Congenital Heart Defect.

Congenital heart defects are present at birth and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works. They can affect how blood flows through the heart and out to the rest of the body. CHDs can vary from mild (such as a small hole in the heart) to severe (such as missing or poorly formed parts of the heart).

About 1 in 4 babies born with a heart defect has a critical CHD. Babies with a critical CHD need surgery or other procedures in the first year of life.

Rainn’s Story:

My son Rainn has a single ventricle heart, or what is called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. This is a sporadic and rare congenital heart defect. Basically, his heart formed with the right chamber being too small to support his life. At 4 months he had heart surgery and will need another surgery around age four.
